Introduction

Sanjo Bridge is a bridge spanning the Kamogawa River in Kyoto, Japan and is an important part of Sanjo-dori. The exact construction date is unknown, but it is believed to have existed since ancient times. During the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the bridge was renovated and remnants of the design can still be seen on the railings. The current two-lane concrete bridge with pedestrian walkways was rebuilt in 1950. Sanjo Bridge also marks the end point of the Edo period highways, Tokaido and Nakasendo.
