Introduction
Sannenzaka Street, also known as Channing Slope, is a historic street in Kyoto, Japan. It was built in the year 808 (the 3rd year of the Daidō era). The name "Channing" comes from the "Anjikannon" at the entrance of Kiyomizu Temple, which was used to pray for safe childbirth. Due to the similarity in pronunciation between "Channing" (safe childbirth) and "sannen" (three years) in Japanese, people often refer to Sannenzaka as Channing Slope.
