Introduction

There is a strong connection between Gio, a famous geisha in the Tale of the Heike, and Gio-ji Temple. Gio became a devotee of Buddhism after being rejected by Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The atmosphere here is peaceful, with statues of Gio and Yoshitsune in the temple. The courtyard is covered in green moss, tinged with a faint red hue from fallen leaves, creating a sense of melancholy. As such, this Buddhist temple is known for its tragic story.
