Introduction

Kamigamo Shrine, commonly known as Shimogamo Shrine, was built in the 8th century and is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto with a long history. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The "Tadasu no Mori" in front of the shrine was originally a primeval forest, which is rare and touching. The East and West Main Halls inside the shrine are typical examples of traditional architecture. The nearby Kamogawa Park becomes a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, attracting numerous locals and tourists to enjoy the flowers.
