Introduction

Nanzen-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. It belongs to the Rinzai Zen Nanzenji school. The temple was founded in 1291 by Emperor Kameyama and the first abbot was Ingen Ryūki. Nanzen-ji is considered one of the Five Mountains of Kyoto and the highest-ranking Zen temple in Japan due to its founding by the imperial family.
