Prešeren Square

Introduction
Preseren Square is located on the site of the historical city gate of Ljubljana. The square was built after the city walls were demolished in the 19th century. Saint Francis of Assisi Church, which was built in the 17th century, stands at the north end of the square, while one of Ljubljana's most famous bridges spans the Ljubljanica River at the southwest corner of the square. In the center of the square stands a statue of the great Slovenian poet Franz Preseren, with the goddess of poetry, "Muse," holding a budding laurel branch and placing it on the poet's head. Interestingly, the wall of a building on Wolfovi Street opposite the statue features a relief of the female protagonist, Primič Julija, who was the love interest of the poet. The two statues form a complementary landscape.
