Introduction
Independence Square, located opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, covers an area of about 8.2 hectares. The square is named after the first raising of the Malaysian flag on August 31, 1957, symbolizing independence. At the southern end of the square stands a 100-foot tall flagpole, commemorating this significant historical moment. The square has a soft grass lawn that is open to the public. At the other end of the square, visitors can rest under the arches next to the flowing fountain. There are many historical and cultural buildings in the vicinity, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Selangor Club.
Formerly the Royal Selangor Club's playing field during British colonial times, Independence Square was a social venue for the upper class. Today, it is surrounded by many historical buildings, such as the Tudor-style Selangor Club, the National History Museum, the Memorial Library, the Anglican Cathedral of St. Mary, and the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. The Tudor-style building, constructed in 1890, is still well preserved and serves as a private club. Address Dataran Merdeka is located in Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur 57000
