Introduction

The most prominent building on the monastery square is the bell tower, built in 1740 and in use since the 17th century. It stands at 88.04 meters high and is one of the tallest towers in all of Russia. In 1905, 42 bells were installed, with the largest weighing 65 tons. Unfortunately, during the October Revolution, the great bell was destroyed, leaving only 23 bells. From 2002 to 2004, three new bells were recast and hung on the tower's second level. One of them, called the King of Bells, is the largest bell in Russia, weighing 72 tons and standing at 4.2 meters tall with a diameter of 4.4 meters. Today, the bells of the bell tower once again ring out across the square on festive occasions.
