Introduction
The Kapitan Keling Mosque, located at the intersection of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Jalan Buckingham in Penang, is the oldest and largest mosque in Penang. It was built in 1800, originally in a square shape with a long verandah and sloping roof. In 1926, it was renovated in the Moorish style through generous donations from Muslims and Hindus, as well as the hiring of an architect.
The mosque is named after the leader of the Keling community in southern India. This community was formed by Indian mercenaries who followed Francis Light. The mosque is famous for its creamy white exterior and golden domes, which are among its prominent features. Address Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Georgetown, 10200 Penang, Malaysia
