Introduction
Bukit Cina, meaning "Chinese Hill" in Malay, is believed to have been given as a wedding gift by the ruler of Malacca in the 15th century to his wife Hang Li Po, who had come from Ming Dynasty China. The Hang Li Po well, built by her entourage, also became the main source of water in the area. Today, Bukit Cina (also known as San Bao Shan) is the largest Chinese cemetery overseas and a popular spot for walking and jogging in Malacca City. It covers an area of 25 hectares and has more than 12,500 graves, including 20 Muslim graves. Since the British colonial period, Bukit Cina has been subjected to numerous requisitions and developments, but these crises have been successfully resolved with the opposition from the local community.
