Introduction

Sam Poh Temple, also known as Cheng Ho Temple, is located on Sam Poh Hill in Malacca. Before reaching the temple, visitors will first see a stone tablet with the handwriting of Chiang Kai-shek, which was built to commemorate compatriots who sacrificed themselves for the country during the Anti-Japanese War. Established in 1795, Sam Poh Temple is a typical Chinese-style temple dedicated to commemorating Zheng He's achievements in his seven voyages to the southern seas. Zheng He's original name was Ma Sanbao, and the temple was named after him. However, according to the legend of Malacca, when Zheng He first visited Malacca, his ship was punctured with a hole, and he almost lost his life. Fortunately, a fish called "San Bao" sacrificed itself to plug the hole and saved his life. Therefore, the temple was named after this fish. Sam Poh Temple is bustling with incense, and the main hall enshrines Zheng He's tablet with the inscription "Blessing Protects the Region". There is a statue of Zheng He in the courtyard, as well as the famous "San Bao Well". According to legend, this well was dug by Zheng He when he escorted Princess Hang Li Po to marry the Sultan of Malacca. Its water is fresh and sweet, and it has never dried up. The current San Bao Well has been sealed and turned into a wishing well.
