Introduction

Hohoe Village has a history of over 600 years and is one of the best-preserved traditional villages in South Korea. Its name derives from the unique geographical location, with the Nakdong River forming an "S" shape around it. It is named "Hohoe" because "the river returns here". Mr. Ryu Yoon-ryong and Mr. Ryu Seong-ryong, who lived during the Joseon Dynasty and the Imjin War respectively, made significant contributions to the village. The tile-roofed and thatched houses in the village have been well-preserved in their original form, representing the dwellings of both the upper class and ordinary people. The houses in Hohoe Village are centered around the zelkova trees and unlike other Korean villages, their front sides do not face the same direction. Additionally, the thatched houses are uniquely designed in a circular distribution, adding to the distinctive features of Hohoe Village. Hohoe Village is famous for its Hohoe and Byeolsin mask dances and hosts the International Mask Dance Festival in September or October each year, attracting many visitors.
