Introduction

Bou Inania Madrasa, located in the Karouine Quran School, is the last mosque built by the Marinid dynasty in Morocco and one of the most important religious education institutions in the city of Fes. The Madrasa Bou Inania was founded in 1350 by Sultan Abou el Hassan and continued to be built by his son Sultan Abu Inan Faris in 1357, hence the name Bou Inania. In the 18th century, Sultan Moulay Sliman renovated the school, and in the 20th century, the lower level of the building underwent restorations in plaster, wood carving, and tiles. Bou Inania Madrasa is both a mosque and the only Quran school in Fes with a minaret. The central feature of the school is a cleansing water pool, surrounded by classrooms, designed primarily to provide accommodations for students. The second floor of the building is the students' dormitory, with windows overlooking the courtyard, covered with green tiles. Apart from the prayer hall, the rest of the Madrasa is open to non-Muslims, making it one of the few religious sites in Morocco that allows visits from people of all faiths. Bou Inania Madrasa is considered one of the representative architectural works of the Marinid dynasty and a renowned tourist attraction in the city of Fes.
