Introduction

This Tibetan Buddhist Gelugpa monastery is built at the foot of the mountain and boasts magnificent architecture. The giant statue of Je Tsongkhapa inside the temple is awe-inspiring. The monastery also houses 16 cranial bones of enlightened beings as holy relics of the Gelugpa tradition. There are many well-arranged prayer halls and monk dormitories that resemble a small village. About one or two hundred monks are practicing here, yet there are not too many tourists visiting on a regular basis. If you are tired of overly commercialized monasteries, this one will not disappoint. Moreover, it is an excellent viewing spot for the first bend of the Yellow River at sunset. Climbing up the hill at dusk and overlooking the magnificent sight of the Yellow River is truly an unforgettable experience.
