Introduction

The Big Buddha Temple was built in the second year of Tang Dynasty's Zhen Guan, and was built by Emperor Tang Taizong to celebrate his mother's 60th birthday. The temple includes major caves such as the Big Buddha Cave, the Thousand Buddha Cave, and the Luohan Cave, which preserve many sculptures. The Big Buddha Cave is the center and largest cave in the entire temple, with a statue of a Buddha as tall as 20 meters, magnificently scaled, and exquisitely carved with depictions of buddhas and flying angels behind the statue. The Thousand Buddha Cave and the Luohan Cave preserve many Buddha niches that are as tall as real people, representing typical examples of early Tang Dynasty sculpting art in Chang'an, with many exquisite and vivid reliefs inside the caves.
