Introduction

The Mount Sumeru Scenic Area is a scenic spot with over 100 grottoes. The grottoes were built during the Northern Wei period and have a history of over 1,400 years. In ancient times, the Sikouzi River at the foot of the mountain was also known as the Shimen River, where the Shimen Pass was located on the waterway. It was an important passage of the eastern Silk Road and a significant place for wars and reconciliations between the Central Plains Han dynasty and the minority ethnic groups of the Western Regions. Nowadays, the Shimen Pass no longer exists, but the grottoes located on the eight cliffs still shine with the light of art. The scenic area is divided into two parts, the museum and the grottoes, which are far apart. Tourists can choose to take a sightseeing car in the scenic area (the cost of each ride is 10 yuan and additional fees apply). After arriving at the scenic area, tourists can visit the museum first, where exhibits cover themes such as the grottoes and Buddhist art, mostly replicas. Here, tourists can learn about Buddhist grottoes, collections, and stories related to Buddhism in different places along the Silk Road.
