Introduction

Shanxi-Gansu Guildhall, located in the northern part of downtown Kaifeng, owes its architectural design to the former residence of a descendant of the Zhongshan King, Xu Da, during the Ming Dynasty. The craftsmanship of local brick, stone, and wood carving is well-known in the central plains region and is considered as one of the representatives of Henan Province's architectural arts during the Ming and Qing dynasties. With a long history of over 200 years, the venue is famous for its splendid performances. The first thing that catches one's eye is the stage, also known as the singing or opera house. It used to be a brilliant performance venue for various activities, including festivals, sacrifices, vows, and birthday celebrations. The carving and painting inside the guildhall are also not to be missed. The sculptures of vivid and lifelike Buddhist stories and legendary figures are indescribably valuable artistic assets. Additionally, the colorful and diverse folk painting and ethnic characteristics represented in the paintings are also essential and irreplaceable masterpiece compositions.
