Introduction

The Qianmen Railway Station, also known as "Zhengyangmen East Station," is a widely known name among the locals in Beijing. Its history can be traced back to the construction in 1901 (the 27th year of the Guangxu Era) and was officially completed in 1906. This European-style building is located in the southeast corner of Tiananmen Square and has a history of more than one hundred years. It became the largest railway station in the country at that time and witnessed many historical periods from the late Qing Dynasty, the Beiyang government, the Japanese puppet regime, the Kuomintang regime to the establishment of the People's Republic of China. After several renamings, including Zhengyangmen East Station, Qianmen Station, Beiping Station, Beiping East Station, and finally Beijing Station, the historical mission of this building as a railway station ended perfectly on Sept. 15th, 1959, with the opening of the new Beijing Station.
