Introduction

The Higashi-hennazaki Shrine is the highest ranking shrine among the eight shrines in Ryukyu, built in the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom and was once the new palace of Ryukyu Kingdom. It is now a smaller shrine designated by the government. As one of the eight shrines in Ryukyu, the Higashi-hennazaki Shrine is truly the "protector of Okinawa". Located near Naha Port, it sits on a small hill facing the sea. Therefore, the name of this shrine also implies "above the waves" when large waves come. The best viewing angle is by taking a car across the high-speed road over the sea to appreciate the beauty of the scenery. Coming up the slope from the road, visitors will see a pavilion providing water and a ladle for cleaning. The fortune-telling here is also very special and visitors can draw their own fortune after contributing money. Not far from the Higashi-hennazaki Shrine, there is also the only beach in Naha City with facilities such as safety nets, lifeguards and changing rooms.
