Introduction
The Xiyu Lighthouse, also known as the Fisherman's Island Lighthouse, located in Penghu, is a building with a long history and is listed as a second-class cultural relic in Penghu. The lighthouse was first built in 1778, constructed through the cooperation of the Penghu judge and the Taiwan governor. After multiple renovations since 1824, it now presents a modern style with a white painted round iron pillar. There is a triangular lintel with the English inscription "DAVID M. HENDERSON 1874" above the entrance to the lighthouse, which is the name of the lighthouse designer.
In the courtyard, three well-preserved stone tablets can be seen, which are respectively the "Xiyu Lighthouse Construction Memorial" erected in 1778, the "Xiyu Lighthouse Completion Memorial" in 1779, and the "Xiyu Lighthouse Memorial" in 1828. These relics reflect the hundreds of years of history of the lighthouse, which is worth cherishing.
The Xiyu Lighthouse is one of the earliest Western-style lighthouses in Taiwan. Walking into the Xiyu Lighthouse Park, tourists can feel a strong Greek or Provencal style, and the Western-style buildings and snow-white coral stone walls have their own characteristics.
The park also has a lighthouse museum, displaying many precious relics. In addition, there are three special buildings in the park - fog cannons and smokestacks, which serve to signal ships when visibility is low.
It is worth mentioning that the Fisherman's Island Lighthouse is not only a historic relic, but also witnesses cultural and exchanges in different periods. In the past, even foreign staff members worked at the lighthouse, and there are also graves of foreign lighthouse keepers around the lighthouse, leaving a deep impression on tourists.
