"Game of Thrones" breathtaking filming location - magical Sovilla

The city of Essaouira, known as the City of the Wind, is located right next to the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can not only enjoy delicious seafood and feel the cool sea breeze from the Atlantic, but also taste the "flavor of power" - in "Game of Thrones", Morocco contributed to the filming of the Slaver's Bay region where the power of the Dragon Mother rises. The towns of Astapor and Yunkai in the series were filmed in Essaouira and Ait Benhaddou village respectively.

Essaouira Port was established in the second half of the 18th century and was once the busiest port connecting various continents. Today, it has quieted down, with ancient city walls silently guarding its history. It is also a filming location for Astapor in 'Game of Thrones'.

Medina of Essaouira

The old town of Essaouira features historical sites such as ancient city gates, old docks, old markets, and ancient fortresses. Historically, Spain, England, France, and pirates have vied for control of this place multiple times. In the Middle Ages, Arabs, indigenous African tribes, Berbers, and Jews brought their respective cultures, which intermingled. The bustling scene in reality resembles the prosperous city-states depicted in 'Game of Thrones'.

Essaouira Fortress

The fortress was built in the 18th century for the military defense of the port. It has two levels, with dozens of Spanish cannons on the upper level. The fortress is square-shaped, offering views of the Atlantic Ocean from all four sides. The Skala Fortress is featured in 'Game of Thrones' as the Slave Bay where Daenerys Targaryen recruits the Unsullied army.

Ait Benhaddou

Located in southern Morocco, Ait Benhaddou is known as 'the most beautiful village in Morocco'. It is a must-pass route to the Sahara and boasts magnificent rammed earth buildings listed as a World Heritage Site. It is also the filming location for Yunkai in the TV series 'Game of Thrones'.
