These hidden old neighborhoods in the city give you a different view of Chongqing

Chongqing still retains some of the most down-to-earth old neighborhoods, making it different from any other city in China. These old neighborhoods have the flavor of Chongqing and its history. Next, let's take a look at these old neighborhoods together.

Mountain City Trail

Although Chongqing is a mountain city, it does not lack urban trails. These so-called trails provide convenient shortcuts for Chongqing residents to return home. During the city's development, few places have preserved the original old Chongqing style as well as Mountain City Alley. Here, you can find the Bodhi Vajra Tower, a relic from China's first official anti-cult movement, the old street of Swallow Rock on the cliff edge, the waterworks that symbolize Chongqing as a city, and the old city gate of Chongqing—Tongyuan Gate, among others.
There was once a road called 'The Most Beautiful Road in Chongqing', and it was called Zhongshan Fourth Road. The rich local culture, the lush Huangjue trees, and the cliffside road are all impressions you might have of the mountain city Chongqing.

Huangjue Ancient Path

This ancient path, with a history of over 800 years, is a must-visit place for merchants from Sichuan and Guizhou throughout the dynasties of Chongqing. It is known as the 'Silk Road' of Chongqing. The ancient path began in the Tang Dynasty and reached its peak during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The path is flanked by dense forests, and it is named Huangjue Path due to the many century-old trees planted along it.

Jialing New Road

On the Yuzhong Peninsula, there is an old road that connects the upper and lower parts of Yuzhong, which is called Jialing New Road. Jialing New Road is not 'new'; in fact, every part of it has an 'old' flavor. Starting from the traffic light at Liziba Main Street to the end of Jiankang Road, it spans a total of five kilometers. Compared to the Eighteen Steps that also connect the upper and lower parts of the city, this place has a stronger urban atmosphere and a touch of literary charm.

Huangjueping

This is the first graffiti street in China and also the location of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, one of the eight major art academies in China. As the art center of western China, Huangjueping is also the spiritual home of the 'Huangpiao' (a term for artists who gather here). The Traffic Teahouse is a symbol of the local culture, and its bustling atmosphere is a unique cultural landscape of Chongqing. From the Huangjue tree to the dining table, there are endless stories and conversations. The teahouse is the best place for old Chongqing residents to spend their time after meals. In this teahouse-filled area, you can deeply feel the enthusiasm and straightforwardness of Chongqing people through activities like meeting friends, bird-walking, and playing chess. Speaking Chongqing dialect here is the most authentic experience.
