Five worth-visiting attractions for self-driving trips around Shanghai

Shanghai is known as the "Magic City" by its residents. It is one of the top ten first-tier cities in the world and serves as the leader of China's economy. The city's economic development has been extremely rapid, but it lacks in talent, so large numbers of people from other regions come here for work every year. Although Shanghai has many tourist attractions, they are overcrowded, especially during holidays. Fortunately, there are numerous tourist attractions near Shanghai, so if you don't want to visit crowded areas, you can still choose to go on a self-driving tour in the outskirts of Shanghai.

Shajiabang

Shajiabang is located in Changzhou, Suzhou, very close to Shanghai. It is the largest wetland park in East China. Although most wetland parks are '70% natural and 30% man-made', it is a famous red tourism destination in China. It not only has a military training base but also a national defense education park and a historical cultural village. The city towers seen in TV dramas are here. The most remarkable feature is the dense reed marshes, which resemble a natural maze. During the Anti-Japanese War, the wounded hid in these reed marshes.

Qiandao Lake

Qiandao Lake is located in Chun'an, Hangzhou. It can be said to be the most successfully renamed tourist attraction. At the beginning of the founding of New China, the country vigorously built hydropower stations. Qiandao Lake was built during that period, originally named 'Xin'anjiang Reservoir'. After the reservoir was completed, not only were the ancient cities of Hecheng and Shicheng submerged, but the surrounding mountains were also submerged. As a result, numerous islands were formed. Later, people discovered that the Xin'anjiang Reservoir had more than a thousand islands, so it was renamed 'Qiandao Lake'. With the picturesque island scenery, tourism was developed. Today, Qiandao Lake is one of the most popular attractions among tourists.

Zhujiajiao Town

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is located in Qingpu District, Shanghai, and is one of the most famous ancient towns in Shanghai. On May 24, 2018, it successfully entered the top 50 list of the most beautiful characteristic small towns. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is known as the 'Venice of Shanghai' and is a typical classical water town. Walking on the ancient streets and alleys, looking at the famous gardens and ancient temples, eating sweet and crispy glutinous rice lotus root, fragrant dried plum vegetable buns, and smelling the unique 'stinky' smell of Changsha stinky tofu, it's incredibly pleasant.

Tongli Ancient Town

Tongli Ancient Town is one of the six major ancient towns in Jiangnan and is currently the only Jiangnan ancient town selected as a World Heritage site. Compared to other ancient towns, Tongli Ancient Town is much quieter and is located in the suburbs of Suzhou. It is the most suitable ancient town for self-driving tours, not only because parking is easy but also because it is close to the highway exit. Most importantly, Tongli Ancient Town gathers all the characteristics of Jiangnan water towns. It not only has small bridges and flowing water but also the Suzhou garden 'Retreat & Reflection Garden,' a World Heritage site, and the small island 'Luoxingzhou,' famous for its 'misty rain landscape.'
Shanghai Wild Animal Park is located at No. 178, Nanliu Highway, Pudong New Area. It is one of the few national 5A-level zoos in China, which shows its grand scale. As China's first national wild animal park and the earliest zoo with an animal performance hall, it boasts a large number of wild animals, with tens of thousands of rare animals alone. The best show in the scenic area is probably the International Circus Theater, especially the Russian national circus performance, which is not only wonderful but also very thrilling.
