Help: Came out of Birmingham and drove a short stretch of the M6 (said to be a toll motorway), about 8km, and did not see a toll booth. Do I have to pay? If so, is it the same as paying the congestion charge online ?

You just need a Visa or MasterCard, insert the card and it will be automatically deducted, about 6 pounds each time.
M6 has two lanes, a free lane and a toll lane. At the end of the toll lane, there will be a toll station. If there is no toll station, then you are on the free lane.
M6 has toll stations, we paid more than 6 pounds. If you see no toll stations, you don't need to pay. We didn't pay tolls when driving on M9 to Edinburgh either. The M roads are similar to the expressways in China, in good condition, while the A roads are difficult to describe.
Pay no attention if there is no charge.
