The Akureyri Tunnel on Route 1 can be circumnavigated via Route 83-84, and it's not far.

On Road 1, you can either prepay or pay within three hours after passing through, or you can take a detour and drive about half an hour more. There are payment reminders and payment introductions at the Baofeng Waterfall Tourist Center and the viewing platform after the tunnel.
