I decided to drive to the Eagle's Nest from Munich in the car rented in Germany on a whim, without doing any research in advance, and I had no idea that I would be driving on the Austrian highway, let alone that there would be a toll. I wasn't caught on the spot on the way back, but would I be fined later because of a surveillance video ?

The toll for the Austrian highway is 10 euros for 10 days, and can be purchased at gas stations near the German-Austrian border. After purchasing, it should be kept in the car as Austrian police may randomly check. If not checked, there will be no penalty, as the surveillance cannot determine whether the toll has been paid.

It depends on luck, to see whether the cameras in Austria are powerful.

Neuschwanstein Castle and King's Lake are both in the German part near the border with Austria, and the highway will bypass into Austria. Whether there is a fine from the rental car company or a bill received at home will determine.
