When watching the penguins return to their nests on Penguin Island, is it more convenient to drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne or take a ferry directly from the Mornington Peninsula? I'm mainly concerned about the hassle of taking a car on the ferry and I'm worried it might take longer than just driving around the coast. Thank you ?

After watching the penguins return to their nests, it was already dark. Is there a ferry still? It's not very safe to drive on the Great Ocean Road at night. There are ups and downs on the mountain, and the streetlights are dim. In addition, there are many scenic spots along the way, which cannot be seen at night. The last time I watched the penguins, I stayed in a small wooden house on the island and left in the morning to go to the Great Ocean Road.
