I like the Hilo area personally. The volcano park and Akaka Falls Park are both great to visit. I love the tropical rainforest atmosphere. For stargazing, we just followed the guidebook and went up to the visitor center, but we didn't make it to the highest peak of the observatory. The most memorable thing for me there was not the stars, but the sunset there. It was very beautiful. Actually, if you have enough time, you can go to both.
