Do any friends in the group take the car ferry from North Island to South Island in New Zealand? How much is the ferry ticket for the car and do you need to book in advance? Thank you ?

From Wellington to Picton, the ferry ticket for Cook Strait is about 810 RMB per vehicle (length less than 5.5 meters). It needs to be purchased online in advance, print the order, and arrive at the ferry terminal one hour before departure (each person needs to buy a separate ferry ticket). Remember to go through the dedicated vehicle channel. At the end of the lane at the pier, there is a small booth. Show the order and go through the procedures, and then you can drive the vehicle along the designated route to the ship. After getting on the ship, do not take luggage. Lock the car and go to the upper deck for rest. After about 3 and a half hours, you will arrive at the Picton pier. Remember which floor the car is parked on, and then get on the car and follow the convoy to get off the ship to continue your trip.

When renting a car, ask the rental company if the car is allowed to take the ferry. Some companies do not allow it. Local companies are usually allowed. If not allowed, you need to return to the North Island and pick up the car from the South Island, which is more trouble.
