Want to drive from Füssen to Zugspitze, but I see that I have to pass through Switzerland. I didn't say I wanted to pass through Switzerland when I rented the car because I only planned to stay within Germany at the time. Can I go directly or do I need to call the rental company to report ?

No need to inform the dealership, expand the insurance coverage, and make up the cross-border fee.
To get to Switzerland without going through Austria, you need to buy a high-speed ticket to Austria for 9.2 euros.
Drive to Weis Church from Füssen via navigation, and you won't cross any border. Or add a stopover at the town of Oberammergau, and you won't cross any border either. Both Weis Church and Oberammergau are worth a visit.
It's best to call the car rental company and ask what documents are needed.
You don't have to go through Switzerland.
