I have a friend who came from the UK to rent a car and drove over the speed limit from 70 to 91, and was fined 170 euros. However, the fine for speeding was increased recently, so be careful. Also, look out for tow-away signs, and just because you don't see a payment machine doesn't mean that there isn't one in the area. Sometimes you have to look ahead and behind to find the machine. It's best to download an ANWB app, which shows the location of all parking payment machines.
