Are you referring to the ferry or the ticket? I'm not quite sure. I bought my tickets in advance, and the Venice tickets were bought at the ferry station on the spot. I also suggest renting a car by section, but it also depends on which scenic spots you want to go to. We were mainly focused on museums in the city at the time, so renting a car wasn't very meaningful. In Rome and Florence, you can basically take a taxi or walk. However, it's really inconvenient without a car in the Dolomites, and car rental in Italy isn't cheap. The tolls and fuel are quite expensive. You can figure out which way to go is better.
