There are two companies, Bluebridge and Interislander, that you can book tickets online with. Check their schedules to see if there are any available seats. If you are renting a car, check with your rental company to see if it is allowed to drive it on the ferry to cross the island. Some rental companies do not allow cars to cross the island and will require you to return the car in Wellington and then provide you with a new car when you arrive in Picton.
