At least book one day in advance. It's not that I'm afraid I won't be able to get it, but I'm afraid that booking a room will delay my trip.

I understand. I brought my parents out with me. My dad wanted to drive himself and just stop and stay wherever he wanted, and make reservations as he went along. But a lot of places are not very practical.
