The most beautiful section of Highway 1 is the one from San Francisco to Los Angeles, including 17-Mile Drive and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Going north isn't much, just crossing the mountains to Seattle.

If you live in the downtown area of San Francisco, you definitely don't need to cross a bridge when heading south on Highway 1. I've been to San Francisco many times, but not all at once. If you're heading back to LA, I suggest taking Highway 5 on the way there, and then taking Highway 1 from San Francisco back to Los Angeles. Let me find the location for you.
