I previously read online guides and thought that the car had to be cleaned before returning it. This made me unable to find a car wash before returning the car, so I had to hand wash it at the gas station. In reality, when returning the car, they only check if the gas tank is full and if there is any new damage to the car. They don't care about the dirty exterior and interior of the car. Of course, keeping the car clean reflects your quality of car use.

My personal experience tells you that this is not necessary. If you really can't find a car wash, don't worry too much. Of course, you'd better check the rental contract to see if there are any separate requirements for returning the car clean.
