Do we need to book accommodation in Monterey or Carmel in advance on Highway 1, or can we find it when we get there ?

Monterey is bigger than Carmel and easier to live in. I booked the Monterey hotel in February.

I booked Monterey and San Diego. Wherever else we go, we'll just live wherever we get there.

If you feel very safe, I suggest deciding where to stay after you get there. I had to drive the most dangerous part of Big Sur at night last time because I had to get to San Simeon and didn't have time to go to many other places.

You can book a room at any time. Staying wherever you drive is what Road trip is all about.

Although it is not the peak season for local travel, I still book in advance to ensure safety in the city.

It's best to book in advance, so you can get a hotel with good value for money. When you get there, there will definitely be hotels, but the uncertainty is too great.

If it's not a specific day, I usually book the day before! Sometimes the price displayed on the sign at the US hotel is cheaper than what you booked earlier!

There are many hotels, but the prices vary.
