Introduction

Isla Magdalena, located near Punta Arenas, is one of the largest penguin islands outside of Antarctica. Over 60,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins come to the island to breed every year from October onwards. If you want to see these adorable creatures, you can take a trip to Magdalena between November and the end of February by taking a boat from Punta Arenas. In some years, the penguins stay on the island longer, and you can take a boat to the island in early March. However, the number of penguins on the island decreases later in the breeding season. Various companies offer similar itineraries, and boats departing from Punta Arenas take two hours to reach Isla Magdalena, where you will have an hour to observe the penguins. The entire journey takes five hours. Boats typically operate once a day, mostly departing at 5 or 6 p.m. and occasionally at 6 a.m. The schedule is determined based on the penguins' most active period.
