Introduction

Located about 35 kilometers northwest of the center of the city of Cuenca, Cahas National Park is one of the most famous national parks in Ecuador covering an area of about 288 square kilometers. The park has an elevation between 3156 and 4450 meters and boasts unique geographic features and diverse species. The park is surrounded by a network of glaciers and about 270 lakes, providing a breathtaking sight. While wandering in the park, visitors may encounter wild rabbits and llamas. As a paradise for endangered species, bird enthusiasts can also find South American condors and the world's largest hummingbird, the Giant Hummingbird. Walking through the Andes mountains within the park, visitors will witness a variety of stunning scenery, including breathtaking lake views and diverse vegetation. There are 12 different routes to choose from, four of which are relatively easy and eight are more challenging, making it easy for visitors to find routes that suit their preferences and abilities. Even the shortest route, which circles around the Toreadora Lake nearest to the park entrance, takes about two hours. The first part of the route is relatively easy to walk, while the second part is steeper. Visitors must follow the set paths and pay attention to safety precautions while touring the park. It is recommended to visit the park in the morning, as the weather often changes in the afternoon, sometimes resulting in foggy or rainy conditions. If visitors choose a longer hiking route, it is essential to hire an experienced guide. Due to the high altitude of the park, visitors should prepare warm clothing, waterproof and warm shoes, and extra socks.
