Introduction

The National Museum of Australia is located in the city's government administrative district of Canberra, surrounded by the National Gallery of Australia, Australian War Memorial, National Library of Australia, and the Australian diplomatic enclave. It was officially opened to domestic and foreign tourists for free by Australia's current Prime Minister, John Howard, on March 11, 2001. As Australia's first social museum, the National Museum of Australia documents both the history and future of Australia. In its first year of opening, it attracted over one million visitors.
