Introduction

In the early 19th century, Guadalajara built the Cavanias Relief Society, which provided protection and care for orphans, the elderly, disabled people, and chronically ill patients. It was the only relief society at that time, and its design considered the needs of these special groups. The relief society was known for its harmonious, simple design, and scale. In the early 20th century, the relief society's chapel was decorated with murals designed by one of Mexico's most famous mural painters, Jose Clemente Orozco, now regarded as a masterpiece in Mexican art.
