Introduction

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, located in the United States, is the first art museum on the West Coast. Founded by Grace Morley in 1935, it was originally called the San Francisco Museum of Art. The museum was established on a strong foundation with the donation of 36 precious artworks from Albert M. Bender, including Diego Rivera's "Flower Carrier" for the museum's permanent collection. Bender also became a member of the board of directors and donated over 1,100 artworks to the museum before his death in 1941. In 2008, the museum launched a redesigned website to better showcase its permanent collection. In addition, the museum has a 14,400 square-foot (1340 square-meter) rooftop garden that was transformed by architect Jensen into a gallery in 2009, with a glass-enclosed bridge connecting it to the fifth floor of the museum.
