Introduction

Whitby Abbey, located in the town of Whitby in Yorkshire, overlooks the entire town and the East coast of England. The Abbey was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and has a whole cemetery by the seaside. The elegant buildings within the abbey include massive columns, towering arches, open windows, and galleries. The benches and galleries inside the church are also distinctive. To reach the abbey and the church, visitors must walk along the famous 199 steps on the cliff. The blue sky and seascape above the North Sea are breathtaking, making one feel the ancient and sacred atmosphere it emanates.
