Introduction

The Moors Fountain, located at the southern end of Navona Square, is a sculpture featuring Moors or Africans wrestling with dolphins against a background of conch shells. Four Tritons (messengers of the sea gods) surround the sculpture, which is set in a rose-colored marble fountain. Designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575, the fountain originally only featured dolphins and four Tritons, but was later joined by the Moors statue in 1653 by Bernini.
