Introduction

The ancient site of Epidaurus, located on the Peloponnese peninsula, is situated in a small valley and extends several levels upward. The worship of Asclepius, the god of medicine, began here in the 6th century BC, but the main monuments - especially the theater - did not appear until the 4th century AD, and are considered one of the most perfect examples of Greek architecture. During the Greek and Roman periods, this vast site was a place of prayer for recovery, with temples and hospitals dedicated to the gods. - UNESCO Introduction
