Introduction
The White Tower is an iconic building in Thessaloniki with a quite tragic history. In 1826, Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II ordered the execution of all members of the Sultan's Guard who were forced to convert to Islam. To conceal this heartbreaking history, in 1913, the Greeks occupied the city and painted the tower white. Since then, the White Tower has been home to a Byzantine Museum for visitors to explore.
