Introduction

The West Indies Archive, located inside the ancient merchant exchange in Seville, is a repository of invaluable archival documents that record the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines. Designed by Juan de Herrera, the building reflects the characteristics of Spanish Renaissance architecture and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The archive houses a rich collection of documents from conquerors to the end of the 19th century, including Cervantes' job application, Pope Alexander VI's bull that divided the world between Spain and Portugal, Columbus' diary, and maps and plans of American colonial cities.
