St Michael’s Gold-Domed Monastery, A Glimpse of Heavenly Splendor

Mykhailivska Ploshcha, Kyiv
4.3

Introduction

After walking along the straight road for more than 200 meters, you will reach the Saint Michael Golden-Domed Monastery, which includes a cathedral, monastic buildings, and the Golden Gate Blue Wall. The famine during the Soviet era left behind a memorial and information board, while the image of the saint on the left wall of the front gate is particularly striking. The monastery and cathedral were built around 1110, and despite being forcibly dismantled during the Soviet era, they were rebuilt after Ukraine gained independence and were restored in 1999. Visitors can rest on the benches in the monastery area, which is free to enter, but please do not enter the buildings of the monastery.

Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербург), established in 1703 on the marshland at the deepest point of the Gulf of Finland, showcases Peter the Great's ambition in its architectural style and natural landscapes. In the past 300 years, the city has undergone several name changes, from Leningrad to Petrograd, and now Saint Petersburg. Its fate has also been tumultuous, including experiencing the White Terror, enduring a 900-day siege, and witnessing the heroic defense during the Great Patriotic War. Its brilliance has never been overshadowed by gunfire or bloodshed. After protection and reconstruction, it remains "open, inclusive, and romantic"
