Introduction

St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kiev is one of the city's most famous buildings and a popular tourist attraction. It is said to have been built in 1011, and its 1000th anniversary was celebrated in 2011. During the Soviet era, the building was used as a museum and included the Cathedral of Gold and Green Roofs, a bell tower, and another church. Today, the cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One option is to take the M3 green line subway to Zoloti Vorota station, then walk north (left) 400 meters after exiting the station. After passing through a crossroads and a T intersection, you will see the main entrance to the cathedral district on the left at the third intersection. If departing from Independence Square, walk up the hill to the left or right at the bend in the middle. From the left uphill road, walk straight for 300 meters, then turn right at the end and it will be on the left at the next intersection. From the right uphill road, walk straight for 300 meters, pass through a crossroads, and then turn left at the T intersection. The main entrance to the cathedral district will be within 150 meters.
