Introduction

The same-named church tower, which serves as an absolute landmark in the center of Porto, is 76 meters high and has 6 floors. Built in 1763, it was the tallest building in the country at the time and became an unmissable attraction in the old town due to its height, which can be admired from different angles. Ships coming to Porto in the past also saw it as a lighthouse and symbol of the city. If you want to enjoy the most beautiful views of Porto's old town at once, be prepared to climb 240 steps. Climbing to the top of the tower and overlooking the entire center of Porto in 360 degrees is definitely worth it! This tower is part of an 18th-century Baroque church commissioned by the charitable organization Irmandade dos Clérigos Pobres. Italian designer Nicolau Nasoni designed this typical 18th-century Baroque church. The façade of the church is exquisite, intentionally leaving a broken triangle that is different from traditional buildings on the top floor, adorned with wreaths and shells. Inside the church, there is a colored marble altar that is well worth seeing. The church once had a infirmary, spreading the love of God. The designer did not receive payment at that time and received a nominal amount many years later.
